How to prevent mold in the washing machine

If the black mold appeared in the washing machine, only an integrated approach may help. The main danger is its enviable resistance to any treatment. A single treatment gives only visible results, however it soon appears again. To finally get rid of the mold, clean the appliance manually using acid or active substances, high temperature and total dryness.

Do not let colonies spread through the washer. When washing, water spreads spores around the drum and they get onto the laundry. Such contact may cause itching, allergic reactions and skin irritation from “contaminated” clothes.

Method #1

Develop a habit of adding white vinegar or oxygen powder bleach when washing white bedclothes and towels. Use the 1:1 proportion. A safer and gentler option is to pour 2-3 glasses of vinegar into the rinse compartment. Then start the cycle at 90 °C. This approach will save you from a possible recurrence and will restore white cotton things.

Method #2

The golden rule when fighting mold is regular washing at a maximum temperature of 90 °C. Hot water can kill spores in the bud. It is enough to run the idle cycle once a month at the maximum temperature, adding citric acid and active bleach into the tray. Note that at 50-60 °C colonies of mold feel great and continue spreading.

Method #3

Once in 5-6 months, run the machine without the laundry. You will need one liter of vinegar and 300-400g of citric acid. Such a killer mixture cleans plaque and scale, removing any signs of mold.

Preventative measures and washing machine treatment:

To avoid black mold in the future, follow a minimum set of rules needed to take care of the
washing machine:

1. Remove residual moisture and possible dirt from the inside of the rubber seal.
2. Ventilate the drum after each wash cycle; keep the door open as long as possible.
3. Clean the powder tray with a detergent every 2 months.
4. After each wash, wipe the door dry and remove any liquid from the tray, then leave it open.
5. Don’t use a gel-based detergents too often, they accumulate on walls and parts, do not wash off well.
6. If the washing machine is installed in the bathroom, do not lock the door tightly, keeping
the possibility for moisture to evaporate faster. Ventilate the room often.
7. Periodically clean, the filter and hoses, as organic remains and debris accumulate there. You can  do this manually and without the help of a technician.
8. If you use a machine cover for the washing machine, do not rush to put it on and close the door   let the machine dry out.

By taking simple steps and following instructions for use, you leave the mold no chances to return or comfortably exist in the washing machine and call our experts to get your washing machine repaired.
