What to do if mold appeared in your fridge?
Stale food is the main reason of the mold in the refrigerator. And it’s not just about a
piece of expired sausage or cheese. For the spores to appear, crumbs, spilled food stains,
etc. are enough.
Moisture in the chambers also facilitates fungus appearance. It may appear even if you
use the appliance properly; but when the requirements are not complied with, ideal
conditions for intense pathogenic microbial flora are created.
- mold often appears in the places that are hard to clean: narrow openings, corners, butt joints,
where organic substances had fallen, may become a perfect seedbed for the mold;
- clogged condensate draining channel is another favorite place of the fungus. When flowing down
the walls, water droplets collect tiny particles of organic substances, which are later deposited on
the narrow channel walls. If the fridge chamber looks clean but it smells unpleasantly, check the
drainage first.
Why is fungus dangerous?
Despite the fact that mold may initially appear on a very small spot, it has an excellent
appetite. The fungus will try to take as much space as it is possible, including fresh food
stored in the fridge chamber.
Appearance of fungus is accompanied by a rather unpleasant smell. Besides, mold is
harmful to your health (fungal cultures for original cheese and antibiotics manufacture are
grown in special conditions and are not closely related to the dark-green deposit, which
may appear in your refrigerator).
How to deal with mold?
The only effective way to deal with mold is to carefully remove it. For this procedure to
be effective, you need to thoroughly disinfect the surface in order to destroy the spores,
and not just clean or wipe surfaces.
- Before washing the refrigerator, switch the power off and defrost the fridge.
- Wash the entire chamber. Usually, local wiping of the infected places produces no effect.
- Clean the shelves, chambers and containers with the gel, used to wash dishes (avoid using abrasive powders and hard brushes!).
Home-made disinfectant solutions:
- laundry soap
- baking soda
- vinegar (weak).
Use these solutions to clean plastic surfaces, though avoid applying them to the
elements made of the polished stainless steel. To clean them, use specialized washing
products.
Cleaning may also be performed using any industrial antiseptic, which is not toxic and is
suitable for washing surfaces in contact with food.
It is often recommended to use an ultraviolet light on the chambers after they have been
cleaned. Not every one has a special lamp, however, thorough drying of the walls,
shelves, and airing of the chamber, may help fix the effect.
Prevention of mold
Mold prevention measures are aimed at eliminating factors contributing to fungus
spores multiplication.
1. Clean refrigerator won’t give fungus a chance. For this purpose, wash all the surfaces thoroughly
and don’t forget to clean the channel of condensate drainage. Even with the most modern models
with no froze function and protection against pathogenic microbial flora, completely defrost the
fridge, clean it and apply antiseptic twice a year. Older models require more frequent cleaning.
2. Proper food storage helps reduce moisture and protect walls and shelves from tiny particles of
organics. Use plastic wrap and plastic bags, sealed containers and utensils with tight lids to create
optimal micro-climate in the fridge chambers.
When fighting mold, incorrect cleaning of the fridge and usage of unsuitable chemical
substances may lead to failure and as a result the appliance
